O Quick Gun Murugan, where art thou?

I still cant get over this character, Quick Gun Murugan. About five years ago (give or take a year), Channel V, aired this series of clips about an English speaking Tamilian in a cowboy outfit. This ladies and gentlemen, is Quick Gun Murugan. Ofcourse, this introduction is for people who missed the antics of QGM, either because they werent in India then, or just didnt watch Channel V much.

Ah, those fiery stares, and strong dialogue delivered in an angry Sivaji Ganesan style, of Quick Gun Murugan, is a sight to behold. Though these clips, seemed to make a mockery of us Tamilians, but what the heck, it was done so well, that I enjoyed it every bit. Much more than Uddham Singh.

The great thing about these clips was, QGM, was a cowboy just in outfit. The dialogues, and expressions, were classic '40+ year old Tamilian' dialogues. I mention the age factor here, because, I havent really come across any young Tamilian (including me, if you didnt already know), who uttered 'Mind It' at the end of an angry conversation. I could identify that 'Mind It' only with an angry 40+ year old teacher (or some pissed off grown up).

And then, there was the ever so famous, 'What to do, we are like this only' phrase at the end of the clip. (Or was it just We are like this only ?) . The 'only' part at the end of the sentence was classic south indian.

Sadly, my memory (which as usual, is quite bad) is quite fuzzy about some of QGM's famous dialogues. I remember a scene where QGM goes

" Paal kudikkira pasanga, beer kudikkakudadhu"

translated,

"Kids who drink milk, shouldnt drink beer"

And mind you, this dialogue was delivered with QGM's infamous sneer, at a young dude, who sipped a bottle of beer, and swooned. Sad part is, am not sure, if this was a spoof of QGM by Hayward's 5000 (a popular beer brand in India), or was it a Channel V clip of classic QGM.

But, I sure wish I could see all of QGM's videos again. Couldnt find a single video link online. Any QGM fans out there, who may have something for this poor soul who misses his buddy Murugan? :)

  • "Mudhala sambar, appuram nee!"
    -Quick gun murugun!
translation: First my sambar. then you! (will finish you off both)

whew! the fastest gun south of the vindhyas..and he drinks sambar, how refreshing! More a mexican bandito than a blue eyed cowboy! with his sickle(aruval) moustache. Althought I suspect the true inspiration for that character was our own "gentleman" Arjun. Before he made it big!!! arjun used to act in B movies, which were mostly cheap remakes of classic cowboy western movies in tamil and telugu! Any one who has seen " thanga nagam" (the gold cobra) which was an unintended hilarious assasination of Mc Kenna's gold would know what I am talking about.
If you havent you should get the video and see it....and.....if you reach for your guns or aruval after that..well "bring it on!"
and remember .. tie your lungi's tight! for quick gun murugun's brother,(Me) will give you a good fight! Mind It!

  • Oh yes, thanx iii for reminding me of the Sambar dialogue. Wish there were more stuff of QGM that I could remember. By any chance, do you remember any more golden nuggets of QGM?

Ah, QGM's younger bro? I gotta watch out. I aint want no trouble with you Murugan Brothers! The lungi shall be kept tight.

  • Dumbs, QGM, wasnt advertised as a movie. Not to the best of my knowledge. They were those mini ads for the channels themselves.

  • Whatever it is guys, these clips (ads for Ch [V] "only") were out of the normal for their time and still represent a delectable sense of humor and creativity in their makers that we today are still able to reminisce about... I wish [V] or that die-hard video archiver somewhere would release some of these timeless classics as - either legit or hush-hush mpegs.

    Cheers to sambhar! Wokay?

  • I concur with Ajay. (Thanks for the comment btw!) Any archiver out there, who could release some mpegs of QGM, will greatly benefit from a whole range of gratitude from a lot of us, QGM fans!

There are quite a few QGM fans out there. And I think the QGM flicks are timeless classics. They will be as funny now, as they were 8 - 10 years ago.

  • Trying to find out who the original Channel V QGM actor is (not Rajendra Prasad, who is the actor from the movie). Any ideas?
